Hi Lawrence,
As far as I know, no one has tried a lateen rig with the Pudgy yet. We're planning a Marconi rig, however.
Thanks for the suggestion.

We're honored that you had a look at our website. We're huge fans.

To our readers: Susan Fels is the great-great-granddaughter of our hero, Captain Charles Tyng, and the editor of his memoir, "Before the Wind". (I hope we got that right.) For maritime history fans, "Before the Wind" is a must read. If you love memoirs, it is too.

Has a lateen sail ever been tried on a pudgy? Such a simple rig might help in heading by putting more sail forward. Would be easy to set up too. Something on the order of a sunfish lateen.

Regarding the kite sail to move the craft, be sure the kite has an inflatable section on the leading edge and a small weight on the trailing edge to make the kite self tending so it can launch itself from the water without occupant effort. This way the occupants of the craft can tend to survival tasks. By the way if you don't have a sail or kite an umbrella will move the craft quite well just the same way a windsurfer shifts the sail forward and back on a board. Point the umbrella over the rail (port or starboard depending on the wind), shift it to the bow or stern to steer the craft and move it about. Be sure to use golfers or survival umbrellas that wont collapse in the wind. You can double its use to gather the small fish that accumulate under your craft.

We just missed the weather for trying kite sailing. If it hadn't been for that October snowstorm we would have made it. Looks like we have to wait for spring.

I feel the Portland Pudgy is the best dinghy – survival boat ever built bar none. And Ive built my share of survival boats. All have done extremely well (sans the weight saving you offer) Thanks for the post.
